For over a year I have been obsessed with a fun, sweet drink that I had never heard of before- Bubble Tea. If I am being more specific, I am speaking of the fruit teas, although you can also try them as a milk-based tea. I am constantly introducing it to my friends, so I decided to share it with you! Bubble Tea started in Taiwan in the 1980s and now is found around the world in Bubble Tea Shops.
When you go to order your first bubble tea you may be intimidated by all the choices. There are so many combinations of teas to create! First, you will decide on your base for your tea. Classic choices are a juice or milk, but other options include a slushie or smoothie. Although they are called teas, I don’t find the tea flavor in the juice tea very strong, to me it tastes more like a sweet fruit juice.
One of the biggest reason I love this drink is the texture it has. This comes from adding a solid to your tea. My absolute favorite is the pops, which are orbs with juice inside that pop in your mouth. They are the pink circles in the picture above. Another option is boba, a small chewy tapioca balls, the green and white substances on the right above. Once you have completed planning your tea, the cup is put in a special machine that shakes it up and gives it a froth, or “bubbles”, that gives the drink its name.
Then the only thing left to do is enjoy this kooky, refreshing juice while relaxing in a large fruit chair (I have no idea what fruit it is- Do you?) You can also check out my bubble tea experience in Northampton, Ma.
