We headed out on a road trip through New York state only because we wanted to visit Niagara Falls and live in Rhode Island. I was so impressed with the beauty and diversity of New York state. It is so much more than New York City and its suburbs. Here is a basic itinerary of our New York State road trip, including links to specific locations.
Day 1 and 2: Albany, the Erie Canal and Herkimer
Visit the capital city of New York– You knew it wasn’t NYC, right? The Erie Canal was an incredible history lesson that I didn’t even know we needed to learn. We all loved the experience of riding the locks on a canal cruise.
Day 3: Ithaca
Robert H. Treman State Park is one of the nicest hikes I have been on in the US– so pretty– and Ithaca is a darling, little college town.
Day 4-6: Niagara Falls, New York and Canada
Niagara Falls is a bucket list item for sure!
Day 7 and 8: Buffalo and Lake George, New York
My son loved having buffalo wings in at Anchor Bar in Buffalo where the first buffalo wings were reportedly served.
Day 9: Saratoga Springs, New York
This idyllic town set in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains still has the water springs that made it a destination for pilgrims seeking health in the 1800s.
