Enjoy this week’s addition of Your Best Adventure Yet from Lauren Monitz of The Down Lo. Iceland is one of my favorite countries that I have visited- absolutely stunningly beautiful. This sounds like such a fun and interactive way to experience it!
Becoming a Certified Viking in Iceland
It’s not everyday you have the opportunity to become a certified Viking, but it is the only resume builder anyone ever asks me about. A specialty outdoor tour in Iceland, the Viking challenge was a week of intense adventure challenges that included glacier climbing, arctic whitewater rafting, Icelandic horseback riding, ATVs, and hiking.
The week started off with a bang, literally. Iceland had just experienced a volcanic eruption and the stark white landscape was dotted with black ash making for a dramatic canvas to our expedition. We were outfitted with crampons and ice picks and told our first task would be conquering Sólheimajökull, part of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. After a quick trek across the frozen surface, we were given a demonstration about how to scale the icy wall. What goes up must come down, and we took turns rappelling down the waterfalls.
From there, it was off to the races. Not really, but for how adorable Iceland horses are (shorter and stockier than other breeds), they were raring to go. We galloped along the lava fields before upgrading to more horsepower (pun intended). Our ATV experience was billed as a “trip to the moon,” and the landscape looked like a scene from Mars. We stopped by the black sand beach where Clint Eastwood filmed Flags of Our Fathers and paused for photos at the midpoint between North America and Europe.
We had a wake-up call in the chilly rapids before heading to the Blue Lagoon for some much deserved R&R. We rejuvenated ourselves with lava facials in the natural hot springs, and you could even say we got to know the land inside and out. The final challenge was a scavenger hunt around town to test our mettle and solidify what we learned about the culture and environment. It felt like our own personal version of the Amazing Race (exhausting, but indeed, amazing).
