I recently visited the US Virgin Island, St. Croix, as a stop on a Caribbean Cruise. Although I had researched things to do on St. Croix before I visited, I found getting around on the island to be very limited and want to share my experience with you.
How to Get a Taxi in St Croix from the Port
Unlike many of the other Caribbean Islands that I have visited as cruise stops, the taxis in St. Croix are disorganized, so you will be haggling with a bunch of drivers. Also, when I went, they said the roads were so bad that they couldn’t get to half of the island.
What We Ended Up Doing in St. Croix
Because the cabs were so disorganized we ended up spending a lot on our cab. On the way to Christiansted, we took a stop at Cane Bay. This was about an hour’s drive from the cruise port, but we did enjoy our time.
What to do in Christiansted, St. Croix
Christiansted was the capital of the Danish West Indies in the 1800s.
Walk Along the Well-Organized Streets
African-Danish bright pastel-colored houses with red roofs are cheerful and beg for a walk.
Learn about the Island’s History by Visiting the Christiansted National Historic Site
Explore the Christiansted National Historic Site, which includes Fort Christiansvær. It is a beautiful fort that was built in 1738 with beautiful views of the ocean. If you are a fan of the musical, Hamilton, or US history, you will also love finding out about his ties to the area, as he was born and raised here.
Have Lunch at Shupe’s on the Boardwalk
Enjoy lunch at this waterfront casual eatery, where roosters will strut around your barstool. We were recommended to come here for a burger and truffle fries by a friendly park ranger.
Take a Water Taxi over to Cay Beach
The public is welcome onto this small island just off Christiansted. You can buy tickets to the water taxi in front of The King Christian Hotel. The taxi runs often. We laid down our towels, grabbed a drink at the bar, and snorkeled in the relatively calm waters at this beach.
Although the day turned out different than we expected, St. Croix ended up as one of our favorite islands. Maybe another time we will come back and rent a car and find the bar where you can feed nonalcoholic beer to pigs. We would also make sure to SCUBA here next time.
