When I am travelling, I usually soak in some historical fiction or something set in the place I am visiting. If you follow me on Instagram, you can see that much more of my travel in the summer is spent close to home at pools or New England’s beaches. Summer is about getting outside and relaxing.
In the summer when I’m home, I want something that I can read in spurts as I relax by the water. I want something that keeps my interest easily and gives me a virtual adventure. And I always want to read a book that makes me think and will start conversations among my friends and book club.
What am I reading this summer?
The book that Random House sent me to read recently is a perfect summer book. Full of real and likable characters, The Marriage Pact explores how very smart people can get involved in crazy schemes. The Marriage Pact is about a couple who joins a cult-like group called The Pact. The narrative moves fast, with short chapters. The main character, Jake, is a marriage counselor. The author, Michelle Richmond, uses his experience to really delve into what marriage is and how it works. I also love the quotes and statistics she uses about marriage. Here is one of my favorites:A Successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. https://ooh.li/b8877b2 #AD #themarriagepact Click To Tweet
Last summer I read and really liked The Girl on the Train. This book has a similar feel, but gave me more to think about when I was done, so I liked it even more.
Where is The Marriage Pact set?
If you have perused my “Books that Inspire Travel” section, you know that I love it when a book lets me live vicariously in another place for a time. The Marriage Pact is set around one of my favorite US cities, San Francisco. I lived there for three years and the author, Michelle Richmond, rekindled memories of ordering a burrito in the Mission district and driving around the area.
This book is definitely a book to inspire travel to the Bay Area. One of the rules of The Pact is that married couples have to take a vacation at least every nine months. Now that is a rule that I can get behind!
Are you in a book club? This is a great book club book for this summer. My book club still meets during summer, either on a member’s boat or at a restaurant’s waterside deck, and we’ll be reading The Marriage Pact. Let me know in the comments what you think!
