8 Reasons to Visit Iceland in Fall

For my 40th birthday, I headed with three ladies to Iceland for a weekend. There are so many reasons that Iceland is the perfect place to celebrate a milestone and spend a long weekend. My birthday is in November, but I wanted to visit while Iceland was still a bit warmer, so I chose to visit Iceland in fall. In my planning, I discovered that fall is the perfect time to visit Iceland. Read on to find out why you should visit Iceland in fall.

Why Iceland should be on your bucket list
This random sign was the first thing I saw when I got off the airplane in Iceland. What an auspicious and perfect start to the trip and my 40s!

Iceland is Conveniently-Located

Halfway between Europe and North America, Iceland is a convenient place to go from either continent. The flight was only a little over four hours from Boston on Iceland Air, which is a lovely and affordable airline. If you are traveling between the US and continental Europe, this airline also has a free layover program so that you can check out Iceland. I am a small business owner and the mom of three boys, so I only had four days to travel. We saw so much beauty in the four days.

Iceland is Warmer than you Think

I am not a fan of cold temperatures, but because of its location on the North Atlantic Current, coastal Iceland retains temperatures between 30-60*F year-round. We wore jackets while we were in Iceland in October, but didn’t need more than that.

Iceland is Full of Bucket List-Worthy Items

I wanted to be able to check something off my bucket list while Iā€™m still kicking, and there are so many possibilities in Iceland. In Iceland, you can go ice caving, see the Northern Lights, SCUBA between the European and North American tectonic plates, snowmobile on a glacier, walk on a black beach. The options are endless!

The Northern Lights are Visible in Iceland in Fall

The bucket list item I wanted most to check for my fortieth was specifically to see the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. This phenomenon can be seen in Iceland from September through April. In the winter, Iceland has complete darkness, but in the fall, we had nice long days, with dark skies to see the lights. Since my birthday is in November, the timing was perfect. We also snowmobiled on a glacier and got a floating massage, which wasn’t on my bucket list, but would be now.Ā

See Iceland without the Crowds

Iā€™m not into crowds, and fall is Icelandā€™s offseason, so I could see the Northern Lights and be chill and surrounded by nature.

Fall is the Perfect Time to be Active

I love to be active and adventurous. Icelandā€™s hiking is fantastic, and the sightsĀ are some of the prettiest I have ever seen! Any adventure you can imagine you can find there. I want to go back to go caving in an ice cave and explore theĀ volcanoes.

Iceland is Unique

I wanted something different than my own home. The people are fun, tongue-in-cheek. The food was great, really fresh, and we tried some unique things.Ā

Inland is Still Accessible in Fall

All but the coastal roads can be inaccessible during winter in Iceland. In the fall, everything is still easily driveable.

  3. Hey would you mind stating which blog platform
you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but
I’m having a hard time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.

The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs
and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

  10. A damn good choice for your 40th! We spent Susan’s 40th (last year) camping at the “Gates of Hell” gas crater in Turkmenistan and it was tremendous. We’re hoping to make it to Antarctica for mine, but it’s so so so expensive! And for her 50th she’s determined we’ll be going to the moon.
